Greens Beach Retreat
The site is located along the beautiful Greens Beach coastline in Northern Tasmania, a rugged area that is characterised by a mix of gorgeous sandy beach, rocky cliffs and native bushland. The site itself is a relatively small, narrow site that sits amongst a series of dwellings that are waterfront with direct access to the beach.
With the brief for this project being for a small, 1 bedroom retreat that for the client, was all about getting away from city life and recharging, it was critical we approached the design of this dwelling as “outward”, taking in as much as we could from the views and prevailing winds, along with natural amenity that surrounded. It was as much about the north views towards the beach, and the south views which were to the remainder of the site which was thick beautiful native vegetation.
Despite being a small site with a bushfire overlay which restricted our overall footprint, we found an opportunity for the living spaces to stretch as far across the site as possible, the facades then opening up almost entirely with flexible, high performance double glazing to both the north and south. The effect of creating this small footprint “pavilion” like living spaces is to create the feeling of complete immersion in these stunning surroundings. In the warmer months, the glazing can be completely opened up in multiple directions, allowing for significant cross-flow ventilation across the spaces, and thoroughly challenging the perception of indoor and outdoor.
Our clients dreamt of sitting on the edge of the facade reading books as the waves lapped up in the near view.
