Green Gable House

Nestled on the edge of Hepburn Regional Park, Green Gable House is the realisation of a retired Melbourne couple’s dream for a peaceful regional retreat. Previously occupied by a modest Airbnb, the site overlooks the state park and offered immense potential—but also significant challenges, particularly navigating stringent CFA regulations during the planning process.

The design evolved through a collaborative approach with the CFA, with a number of iterations worked through to ensure the home’s siting met fire safety requirements without compromising the connection to the bushland surroundings. The result is a robust, three-bedroom off-grid home that rises naturally from the sloping terrain, its external masonry form echoing the contours of the land. Over time, the materials will gracefully weather, further embedding the house within its environment and fostering a sense of permanence.

Inside, a warm and inviting palette of minimal finishes creates an understated yet refined atmosphere. Delicate attention to detail in joinery, fixtures, and spatial flow provides a counterpoint to the home’s strong exterior, emphasising comfort and livability.

Designed with thermal performance in mind, Green Gable House incorporates passive solar principles, high-performance insulation, and carefully placed openings that optimise cross-ventilation and natural light. Being off-grid, these features ensure the home remains energy-efficient year-round.
